about

WHEN WILL THE RAIN? is a unique piece and stands apart from my usual poetry.

At the time, I was trying to think about how I could write simultaneously: I wanted the reader to have multiple images and ideas in a single flash.

Marinetti’s essay on the Destruction of Syntax was my biggest influence here. I wanted my poetry, too, to have “Condensed metaphors. Telegraphic images. Maximum vibrations. Nodes of thought. Closed or open fans of movement. Compressed analogies. Color Balances.”

I’d tried to achieve this in previous poems through excessive punning and linguistic ambiguity, but felt the emotional core — the lasting images — often didn’t come out in the wash. In this poem, I looked at collections of stories, images, experiences that I’d accumulated in my ‘ideas’ folder. They soon started to form together, with one side of the poem forming an opulent nightmare and the other, a haunted and sparse dreamscape.

The poem starts with a moment in my life which was very lonely and solitary, emotionally if not physically. I didn’t have a phone or debit card for four months, and rarely left my house. My lifestyle was far from healthy, and the dissociation that came from living outside normal society meant these weird imaginary worlds were born. I switch between the two — a torturous pleasure garden, with a carnival and violent sense of decadence, and a castle in which I was locked inside and had to escape from.

This music has managed to exorcise what I hoped to do with the project: give the feeling of oppressive simultaneousness. I’m proud of the way it has teased the menace — through drumming, loops, repetition — that I hoped this bizarre poem would accomplish.
