about

James: Steve and I are the same age, 47, and have taken opposite approaches to living jazz and philosophy. I “am” a philosophy professor whose commitment to jazz never wavered, Steve “is” a jazz musician who gained a Ph.D. in philosophy last year. Are we both part-timers? Or can there be two loves in one life, such as for your spouse and your child, neither diminished by the other? When our minds meet, the suspicions I’m under here, and that Steve would be under in academic contexts, are obliterated – there is only our conversation.

Steve: If jazz is a conversation, it is a shared one. In a duo setting, the conversation is even more intense. But what is being said? Instrumental music makes this a difficult question to answer. There are no words but there is an exchange: a shared exchange on the level of the affective. In the intensity of the moment of improvisation, the shared affectivity is a singular mystery: it has neither a direct point to make nor does it result in a single, demonstrable argument that can be articulated in words alone. Hence its beauty and distinctiveness as a mode of expression beyond words. Does it practise philosophy? It has indeed been argued yes (including by myself). Does that matter? No. Jazz is jazz is jazz. The listener, affectively engaged in the experience of the music, is enabled to take whatever they take from the sound-art vibrations of the conversation. Does this album practise a concept of the eventness of affect as the medium of the emergent via a duo conversation without words? I would nod yes. Does it diminish the power of this music to think it in such terms? I would shake my head no. Will you dig it? Find out.
